Alaako Oso/The Owner of Songs is Eloquent
8 Yoruba./Lucumi Chants to
The Orishas of Yorubaland
Amma Dawn Mcken, a native of Brooklyn, NY and life long Queens resident, has been singing traditional Yoruba/Lucumi Orisa music since the age of 14. Her soon to be released CD is a collection of eight songs that are sacred chants used to worship Oludumare (God in Yoruba), the Orisa (saints) and the elements of life and nature.
Ms. McKen is one of the most well known and sought after female apons (lead singer) in the US. She has been commissioned throughout the United States, the Caribbean and even Latin America to sing for ceremonies and in concert. She has instructed classes and ethno-musicology workshops in the community as well as numerous schools, colleges and corporations including Duke University, New England Technical College (MA), NYNEX and Oktoberfest in Germany. She appears on several recordings and is cited in John Mason’s book Orin Orisa: songs for Selected Heads. A priestess of Yemonja for 27 years, a mother of six children Amma is also a dancer, a professional tie dye artist, natural hair stylist and owner of Abeokuta Enterprises, an African inspired apparel company.
On this recording Amma is accompanied by a group of experienced African American musicians and singers under the musical direction Orlando “Puntilla” Rios, Cuban master drummer. The CD includes eight songs in the Yoruba/Lucumi tradition including an accappella salute to the Arara tradition and songs that include the bata orchestra, and drum and shekere accompaniment.
This project demonstrates as it is so adequately titled the emergence of singer Amma McKen from bembes to the theatres and stages of world. Through this CD, Amma “eloquently speaks” through the richness of song to the depth of everyone’s emotions, to the needs of all humanity, to the desires of ones heart, and that is to recognize and honor oneself by honoring the love within yourself…which is GOD, the Creator.
Nusori, Inc. is a newly formed production company that produces musical recordings and sponsors educational programs that focus on the culture and traditions of Africa and the Africa Diaspora. Nusori’s first project is a recording of Yoruba/Lucumi traditional religious music by Amma McKen.
